Care and Training
IMPORTANT: visit http://www.holisticat.com/fish_arch1.html for information on feeding your cats tuna!
Most breeders recommend a high-quality dry food for your Birman. We feed ours wet and dry food. They have a bowl of dry available at all times and have wet food once a day - alternating between canned tuna and minced turkey. Birmans can have a continuous bowl of food without becoming overweight.
Keep a good supply of clean, fresh water available at all times. To help prevent kidney failure (as often times occurs in older cats) we provide a water supply that is continually running. Water that is stagnant is more likely to collect things that are can be harmful to your Birman. The water bowl that we use to do this is called an Drinkwell Fountain and you can find it at PetsMart for around $40.
Birmans are very easy to groom. Their single layer coats typically need combed once in a while. Most Birmans never have to deal with matting of their fur because it just doesn't!
Birmans usually require very little training. They typically teach themselves to use the litter box as very young kittens and never forget. However, don't forget to clean the litter often! Some cats will not use a litter box that is too dirty and may have 'accidents' in other places around the house.
